Shazam! has left many DC fans scratching their heads. The movie hasn’t shied away from showing star Zachary Levi in his bulked up costume on set, and it looks like a goofy family film in the spirit of Tom Hanks’ Big. Now, just for April Fools’ Day, the director of this standalone adventure has dropped the first official ‘teaser trailer’. But don’t get too excited. It’s not what you think.
The Shazam trailer actually starts off pretty cool. We see ominous thunder and lightning as we hear the familiar rock sounds of AC/DC belting out Thunderstruck. Perhaps we’re about to see something super cool? Nope. Not at all.
The director has pulled some amazing footage from the old Shazam TV show, which shows our hero strapped to a moving vehicle, windshield just out of frame, to offer a pretty authentic flying scene, at least for its day. Captain Marvel is in hot pursuit of a wild horse who has run off with a woman who can barely hold onto the reigns. We’re treated to over a minute of this out of control pony. And the hero saves the day!
Awesome. If only the movie turns out this good, we might actually have a new kind classic superhero movie on our hands. DC did release an official synopsis for this upcoming entry in the DCEU, which won’t tie directly into any of the movies we’ve seen before, but takes place in a world where Gotham and Metropolis both exist.
“We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word, SHAZAM!, this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart, inside a ripped, godlike body, Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).”
For younger fans who did not grow up in the 70s, they may have no idea what they are looking at in this goofy trailer. Shazam, based on the superhero Captain Marvel, was a live-action half hour superhero series that ran on CBS from 1974 to 1976, lasting 3 seasons as part of the network’s Saturday Morning line-up. It starred Jackson Bostwick as the title hero, but he was later replaced by John Davey. And the story was the same as what we’ll see in the movie.
