Netflix’s Fyre Trailer Takes You Inside the Insane Music Festival Fiasco

Written by 260Blog

Netflix has released the full-length trailer for their upcoming documentary Fyre, which chronicles the now infamous disaster surrounding the music festival of the same name. The event took place in 2017 and, what was supposed to be a luxury getaway for music lovers in the Bahamas turned into an actual nightmare. Filmmaker Chris Smith, who previously worked with Netflix on the Emmy-nominated Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond, is behind the new doc, which looks like it could be one of the first great Netflix originals of 2019,

The Frye teaser does an outstanding job of painting the juxtaposition of the expectations against the reality. Models! Expensive booze! Fancy food! That’s what everyone was there for and what was promised and, as we see, none of that wound up being delivered. Due to the terrible circumstances and poor planning, it was more of an internment camp that people paid thousands of dollars to be at. It’s hard not to wince at just how disastrous this all gets when watching it unfold, even in just these few minutes. Director Chris Smith had this to say about it in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“It [started as] an exploration into the story and then it just kept unfolding in a million different directions. At that point, there was no turning back… Fyre really played into this idea of perception versus reality. They created this amazing facade in their marketing materials, but in the same way that social media is often used to show the best parts of our lives, what was beneath the surface was something entirely different that had very dramatic real-world consequences.”

The original Netflix documentary Fyre offers an exclusive behind the scenes look at the infamous unraveling of the music festival of the same name. Fyre was promoted as a luxury music festival on a private island in the Bahamas, complete with bikini-clad supermodels, A-List musical performances and plenty of fancy amenities to go around. Unfortunately, after paying thousands of dollars to be there, once everyone arrived, they soon discovered the reality was miraculously distant from what was promised.

The festival, as we see in the trailer, was organized by Billy McFarland and rapper Ja Rule. Lawsuits were eventually filed against the pair, following the debacle, and others involved in the event totaling more than $100 million. McFarland is currently serving a six-year prison sentence for defrauding investors. He was actually scheduled to be interviewed for the documentary, but due to his prison sentence, that became impossible. So, sadly, we’re not going to get his side of the story in that way.

The documentary was produced by Library Films, Jerry Media, Matte Projects and VICE Studios, with Brett Kincaid, Max Pollack, Matthew Rowean, Gabrielle Bluestone, James Ohliger and Elliot Tebele serving as executive producers. Fyre arrives on Netflix on January 18. Be sure to check out the new trailer from the Netflix streaming YouTube channel below.
