There’s been several different X-Men costumes over the years and it has been revealed that Dark Phoenix will include some interesting changes. The new suits will not be the ones seen at the end of Apocalypse. Instead, they will be based on the 2000’s New X-Men comic book run. Even in the leaked set photo, the new suits look pretty awesome and like an improvement over the last time we saw the gang all together.
The new leaked photo from the set of Dark Phoenix features Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm, Beast, Quicksilver, and Nightcrawler all in matching suits, which are based on Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s New X-Men run. Mystique is also shown in the photo, but her costume is always the same. The new blue look with the yellow X’s over the chest area is a return to the comics that most fans will welcome with open arms. These suits serve a perfect balance between the movies and the comic books, which is a nice touch.
Dark Phoenix will be the twelfth installment in the X-Men franchise, and the beginning of a new X-Men trilogy. The project is written and directed by Simon Kinberg, and stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain. In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men must face the full power of the Phoenix after a mission to space goes wrong. The new movie is intended to be more faithful to Chris Claremont’s The Dark Phoenix Saga, according to Kinberg.
Director Bryan Singer began looking at the character Jean Grey (Phoenix) in 2003’s X2, with the intention of adapting the Marvel Comics storyline of The Dark Phoenix Saga in the next installment. However, Singer did not return to direct the sequel, which ended up as The Last Stand. The writers, Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn, took on the project to adapt the Dark Phoenix Saga, as only one of the movie’s “parallel storylines.” An executive at 20th Century Fox suggested that the Gifted storyline also be included in the project. These plans were later abandoned when 2014’s Days of Future Past reset the franchise, leaving Kinberg and Penn open to fully explore the Dark Phoenix Saga.
Dark Phoenix is currently in post-production, as of December of last year. Simon Kinberg announced that the post-production process would be a lot longer this time around, so he could fully develop the visual effects and fine tune them. Kinberg has also expressed that this is the story that he’s meant to tell since Bryan Singer exited the franchise. Kinberg says that he feels the story in his “gut” and wants to do the source material justice. Dark Phoenix is set to hit theaters on November 2nd, 2018.
